SUMMARY:Rent Stabilization & Renters' Rights: New Opportunities for Affordable Housing in Boulder?
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1980s\, Boulder activists worked to get rent control on the ballot. The Colorado legislature responded by banning rent control throughout the state. Over 40 years later\, with rapidly rising rents and housing insecurity\, it’s time to take another look at rent control and its more flexible cousin\, rent stabilization. Join us to learn about the history of rent control in Boulder\, efforts to repeal the statewide ban\, and prospects for rent stabilization and other renters’ rights measures\, and to discuss whether these policies are right for Boulder. \nWhen: September 26 (Tuesday)\, 2023; 5:30-6:45 PM \nWhere: Boulder Main library\, Boulder Creek Room\, 1001 Arapahoe Avenue \nModerator: Rep. Judy Amabile (District 49\, Boulder). She has lived in Boulder since 1975 and has 3 adult sons. She is running for State Senate. \nPanelists: \nRep. Javier Mabrey: Javier represents House District 1 in Denver and Jefferson counties. He sponsored HB23-1115 which would have repealed the statewide rent control ban. Javier helped found a non-profit focused on keeping Coloradans in their homes. Since 2020\, Javier’s organization has represented thousands of Coloradans facing eviction and successfully advocated for significant policy changes to help renters in Colorado. \nChris Goodwin: Chris is a retired CU staff member\, former local union president\, former union organizer and longtime local political activist.  He was one of founders of the Renters Rights Project and one of the co-authors of the 1981 rent control initiative in Boulder that led to the statewide ban.  He has lived in Boulder since 1971 and is a documentary photographer. \nTodd Ulrich: Todd is the owner of Premesys Group\, LLC (PG Rentals) and Monitor Property Works\, LLC\, both based in Boulder. \nFormat: Panelists will give brief presentations followed by questions from the moderator and then the audience. Panelists will have opportunities to respond to each others’ comments. In-person only. The event will be video recorded and shared later on our website.
